Yorkton, a 3-year-old Speightstown colt, racked up his third straight stakes win at Woodbine on Labor Day with a 4 1/2-length victory in the $113,200 King Corrie S.
The Chiefswood Stable has really come into his own this summer, and is now 4-0-2 in 10 lifetime starts and has earned $215,220. Prior to Monday’s win, Yorkton took the Queenston S., also on the main track, and the Charlie Barley S. on the turf.
The bay colt was looking to rebound from his off the board effort at Arlington Park last month, when he lost all chance after stumbling at the start. There were no such mishaps on Monday, as he got away cleanly under Jesse Campbell and was up about two lengths after the first quarter mile. He got no real challenges the rest of the way, and finished under a hand ride in 1:15.24, less than a second off the 6 1/2-furlong track record.
“He felt great, he broke clean,” said Campbell. “At Arlington, he stumbled badly. He worked really well the other day, a little too well. He broke clean and he was relaxed down the backside. He was very well behaved and he ran huge.”
“It was really gratifying [to win today],” added Yorkton’s trainer Stuart Simon. “I’m just really happy for the horse. He’s such a nice horse. People are just beginning to know the real Yorkton and they’re going to see down the line what a nice horse he really is.”
The Ontario-bred colt is out of Sunday Affair, and his third dam Maplejinsky, a sister to English Horse of the Year Dayjur, is also the dam of Hall of Famer Sky Beauty. Yorkton is one of a dozen stakes winners this year by Speightstown, while his runners have banked more than $5.8 million in 2017.
