WinStar Farm’s multiple Grade 1 winner Yoshida (JPN) recorded his first winner on Tuesday, July 4, when Third Street defeated a maiden special weight field by a dominating 7 ¼ lengths at Lone Star Park (WATCH RACE).
Trained by Shawn Davis and owned in partnership by Davis and Bill Carnes, Third Street took command of the 5 ½-furlong race at the break, sprinted clear in the early going, and drew off powerfully in the stretch to win as much the best in his second career start. Bred in Louisiana by Bryon Henderson, Third Street is produced from the winning Street Boss mare Abbey Street and hails from the family of Wood Memorial (G1) and Jim Dandy S. (G2) winner Wicked Strong.
A Grade 1 winner on dirt and turf, Yoshida enjoyed a sensational racing career for WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, and Head of Plains Partners, and trainer Bill Mott, banking more than $2.5 million. A versatile four-time stakes winner, and hailing from the influential Halo line, Yoshida competed on three different continents and recorded five triple-digit Beyers over dirt and turf—108, 106, 105, 103, and 102.
Yoshida recorded his most significant victories as a 4-year-old in 2018, winning both the Woodward S. (G1) on dirt at Saratoga and the Turf Classic S. (G1) at Churchill Downs. He won the Woodward with an impressive score over a deep and competitive field in his first start on dirt, earning a 102 Beyer Speed Figure, and ran a 106 Beyer in winning the Turf Classic in decisive fashion.
A determined winner of the 2017 Hill Prince S. (G3), Yoshida finished a strong second in the $1,000,000 Whitney S. (G1) to multiple Grade 1 winner McKinzie and finished ahead of eventual Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Vino Rosso, earning a 108 Beyer. Yoshida was also precocious and gained recognition as a TDN Rising Star for his stylish maiden-breaking win at Keeneland in his 3-year-old bow. He traveled to Royal Ascot in 2018, where he was beaten just 1 ¼ lengths in a field of 15 in the prestigious Queen Anne S. (G1).
Bred in Japan by Katsumi Yoshida’s Northern Farm, Yoshida is by the late champion Hearts Cry (JPN), a renowned sire in Japan and a son of the breed-shaping stallion and dual Classic winner Sunday Silence. Yoshida is the second foal produced from the track record setter Hilda’s Passion, who won the 2011 Ballerina S. (G1) at Saratoga.
Purchased as a yearling for 94 million yen (about $850,000 U.S.) at the 2015 JRHA Select Sale in Japan, Yoshida has been represented by first 2-year-olds up to $270,000 and $180,000 in the auction ring, and his first yearlings sold for up to $120,000 last year.
