Take Charge Tom clearly the best in the Mine That Bird Derby

Take Charge Tom became a three-time stakes winner for Tom’s d’Etat April 6 at Sunland Park with his 2 ¾-length victory in the $125,000 Mine That Bird Derby.

The dark bay 3-year-old got a good stalking trip under Orlando Mojica for the first six furlongs, then with a three-wide move, took over at the top of the stretch and drew clear from there to win under a hand ride.

Take Charge Tom won the Lost in the Fog Juvenile S. to close out his 2-year-old campaign and started off 2025 with a win in the Riley Allison Derby. He is now 4-0-0 in five starts and has earned $193,100 for owner/breeder Randy Howg. Take Charge Tom is the second foal out of Gorgeous Ginny, who also was a three-time stakes winner.

Grade 1 winner Tom’s d’Etat stands at WinStar Farm for $5,000 S&N.
