WinStar Farm and Blazing Meadows Farm’s homebred 2-year-old colt Awaken won the second stakes of his young career on Saturday with a game half-length score in the $150,000 Juvenile S. at Belterra Park (VIDEO).
Super Saver is the sire of nine stakes horses this year, including the Grade 2 Oaklawn H. winner Inside Straight, while his lifetime progeny earnings have eclipsed the $12 million mark.
Winner of the $75,000 Kindergarten S. two starts back, Awaken was favored in Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile contest. Awaken was part of a scramble for the lead going into the first turn, and was hung four-wide, yet still managed to secure a good spot in third heading into the backstretch. He steadily closed in on Play Ball and took the lead after six furlongs.
In the stretch, Play Ball and Awaken pulled away from the field, and it wasn’t until the final strides that Awaken edged clear for the win.
Awaken is now 3-1-1 in five starts, four of them stakes after breaking his maiden in his debut in mid-June. He has earned $175,500.
