So Alive closed with an incredible flourish in the final sixteenth of a mile to win his maiden special weight debut Saturday at Keeneland, coming from ten lengths back at the top of the stretch to win by a neck in remarkable fashion [WATCH RACE].
The 2-year-old Super Saver colt was named a TDN Rising Star after the eye-popping finish on the muddy Keeneland surface.
Seemingly out of contention after the first half-mile, So Alive didn’t show real interest until the final furlong, when he split horses twice and flew past Tapizars Secret, who looked like a winner with 50 yards to run. The final time for the six furlongs was 1:11.21.
So Alive is owned by Robert LaPenta, who purchased the colt for $160,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling sale. Bred by John Gunther and out of Mythical Bride, So Alive is a half-brother to Wood Memorial S. (G2) winner Vino Rosso, while his dam is a half-sister to WinStar stallion Commissioner and graded stakes winner Laugh Track.
Among the leading sires of his generation, Super Saver is responsible for nearly 100 winners and 10 stakes horses this year. He’ll stand next year at WinStar for $30,000, stands and nurses.
