Carribean Caper kept her record intact in Sunday’s $100,000 Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park, putting away Magic Quest in deep stretch to win by a length in her stakes debut (WATCH RACE).
The 3-year-old Speightstown filly has won all four of her starts by a combined 18 lengths since her Feb. 13 debut and has banked $177,490 for Columbine Stable LLC.
In what would be her biggest challenge to date, Carribean Caper was away alertly in the seven-furlong affair, but had to check off the leader’s heels midway down the backstretch. She was guided to the outside for clear running going into the turn. After a half-mile in :46.26, Carribean Caper was a half-length behind Magic Quest. Coming down the lane, Magic Quest held a slim leading inside the furlong marker before Carribean Caper forged to the front to stop the timer in 1;22.09 on the fast main track.
Carribean Caper was bred by WinStar Farm and is out of the stakes-placed Dixie Union mare Checkupfromzneckup, who sold for $825,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale.
Speightstown, the nation’s third-leading sire on the 2021 General Sire list, has 11 stakes winners to date this year, led by the Grade 1-winning duo of Lexitonian (Alfred G. Vanderbilt S.) and Flagstaff (Churchill Downs S.).
