Overbore proved best in Friday’s $150,000 Tremont S., beating a hard-charging Kavod by three-quarters of a length in the 5 1/2-furlong contest for 2-year-olds.
Overbore, who lost his first two starts by a a combined half-length, was up to the task Friday in a field of four following a pair of scratches. With Baytown Frosty and Trust Our Journey locked in a early speed duel, Overbore sat several lengths behind the top pair. The leaders began to fade in upper stretch, and Overbore took advantage, striking the front and out-running Kavod to the wire to finish in 1:05.44 on the muddy racetrack.
“I just think for right now in his career, dirt is his game,” said trainer Wesley Ward, whose colt made his last start on the grass. “I’ll give him a little time to go to the Saratoga Special, and hopefully, he’ll go on to develop to be the horse we bought him for.”
The Saratoga Special (G2) is Aug. 14 at 6 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga.
Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Overbore is out of the Saffir mare Galina Point , a multiple stakes winner in Canada and also placed in a Canadian Grade 3 event. Overbore, who sold for $275,000 as a yearling, is the first foal out of his dam, who also has a yearling filly by WinStar stallion More Than Ready.
The winner is owned by Peter Leidel and is the seventh stakes winner this year for his sire, who currently ranks third in the 2021 General Sire list.
