Speightstown had yet another banner year at stud in 2020, ranking among the leaders in several categories, most notably at the top by both Grade 1 winners and Grade 1 horses.
In a testament to his worldwide influence, Speightstown’s Grade 1 winners came in three different countries. The first of the year came in Japan on March 29, when Mozu Superflare won the Takamatsunomiya Kinen S. (G1) on the turf at Chuyko Racecourse. The now 6-year-old was bred in Kentucky by Alpha Delta Stables LLC and has earned more than $1.8 million.
Speightstown’s 3-year-old colt Echo Town triumphed in the Aug. 1 Allen Jerkens S. (G1) at Saratoga in a year that saw him win or place in four stakes. Bred by Betz, CHNNHK Thoroughbreds, Magers, et al, Echo Town is entering stud duty this year.
Lady Speightspeare proved best in the Natalma S. (G1) for 2-year-olds at Woodbine on Sept. 20 in her stakes debut. The regally-bred Charles Fipke homebred is out of multiple graded winner Lady Shakespeare, whose siblings include Breeders’ Cup winner Perfect Shirl and Grade 1 winner Shakespeare.
Charlatan capped off his 3-year-old season with a dominating score in the Dec. 26 Malibu S. (G1) at Santa Anita Park. Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Charlatan has crossed the wire first in all four of his starts by a combined 26 1/2-lengths and is arguably the most dynamic horse heading into the 2021 season.
In addition to leading the Grade 1 categories, Speightstown was in the top five in 2020 in several others, including progeny earnings, with $11,708,642, black type winners, with 17, black type horses, with 30, and also had five TDN Rising Stars.
As one of the linchpins on the WinStar stallion roster, Speightstown is standing the 2021 season for $90,000 S&N.
