Strike Power turned in a stellar performance in his Dec. 23 debut at Gulfstream Park, rolling to an eight-length score in the 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight contest for 2-year-olds.
Leading the entire trip, the Courtlandt Farms homebred covered the distance in 1:02.67, less than a half-second off the track record and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 102, the second-highest for any 2-year-old, male or female, in 2017.
The winner’s dam, Gold d’Oro, was graded stakes placed and is a half-sister to Lane’s End S. (G2) Adriano.
Speightstown has registered 142 individual winners in 2017, with nearly $8 million in progeny earnings and 14 black type winners.
