Spanish Harlem got her first stakes victory in Saturday’s $75,000 Barely Even S. at Gulfstream Park, soon after Rushing Fall won the Lake Placid S. (G2), to give More Than Ready a pair of stakes winner on the third Saturday of August.
Spanish Harlem, who was stakes-placed last year at Gulfstream, was much the best on Saturday. Content to sit fifth early on, she ranged up on the turn to glide to the front, then basically coasted home in the stretch to win by 1 1/2-lengths in 1:36.25 for the mile on the fast main track.
Spanish Harlem who won an allowance race at Belmont Park in 2017 by 29 lengths, has now earned $196,765 for Midwest Thoroughbreds. Bred in Kentucky by Fred Hertrich III, the winner is out of Spanish Silks, who is a sister to Wood Memorial S. (G1) winner Buddha.
