Selflessly ran down Sweet Melania in the final strides of the $100,000 Lake George S. (G3) Friday at Saratoga to give the 3-year-old daughter of More Than Ready her second career graded stakes victory.
The one-mile turf affair wasn’t decided until the top pair was separated by the placing judges. Selflessly was several lengths off the pace for the first six furlongs, then put in a tremendous run in the stretch, nipping Sweet Melania by a nose on the wire in 1:36.06 on the “good” turf.
“We were happy to get a good trip behind the horse [Sweet Melania] I thought would take us the whole way,” said winning rider David Cohen. “You never really want to get stuck behind a horse that’s going to back up into you. My filly really finished up strong and showed a lot of heart.”
Trained by Chad Brown for Klaravich Stables, Inc., Selflessly won last year’s Miss Grillo S. (G2) and is 2-1-0 in five starts and has earned $219,000.
Selflessly was bred by George Louis Doetsch, Jr. and is one of two stakes winners out of Uniformly Yours.
Among the world’s elite sires, More Than Ready is the sire of 203 black-type winners and 91 graded/group winners and the winners of a record seven Breeders’ Cup races in his illustrious career.
