Sabercat kicked clear in the final furlong to lock up a six length victory in the $75,000 Garden State S. Oct. 2 at Monmouth Park. This was the stakes debut for the 2-year-old son of Bluegrass Cat, following his maiden win Sept. 5 at the New Jersey track.
Sabercat got a nice stalking trip in third for the first six furlongs of the 1 mile and 70 yard race, then went three wide into the stretch before drawing off from the field. The final time was 1:41.94.
“My horse had speed, but there was a lot of speed in there,” said winning jockey Angel Serpa. “I was told to sit just off the pace and come with one run and that’s exactly what I did. He opened up in the stretch and did the whole thing pretty easily.”
Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC, Sabercat earned his second win in five starts. The dark bay colt, bred in Kentucky by Lantern Hill Farm LLC, William Punk, Jr. and Lighthouse Group LLC, is out of the Forty Niner mare Miner’s Blessing and has now banked $81,420 for his connections.
Winchell paid $120,000 for Sabercat at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. He is a half-brother to Busher S. winner Olivine.
