Pirate’s Trove captures Woodbine’s Duchess

Speightstown racked up his 30th stakes horse of 2014 on Sunday at Woodbine when 3-year-old Pirate’s Trove bested Cactus Kris by a nose in the $125,000 Duchess S.

Bred by WinStar Farm and M R Capital, Pirate’s Trove is undefeated in two starts and has amassed $91,470 to date.

After chasing Zensational Bunny through the first five furlongs, Pirate’s Trove assumed command when the field straightened for home. Jockey Florent Geroux deftly guided his filly through the lane, opening up by two lengths in mid-stretch, then holding sway over a the fast-closing runner-up.

The final time for the seven furlongs over the Polytrack was an excellent 1:22.75.

“I’ve been working her for several weeks before she raced,” Geroux said afterward. “She can be a little bit hyper, a little bit complicated sometimes, but she ran very fast and is a very nice filly.”

Pirate’s Trove is trained by Michael Stidham for Al Shahania Racing. She is out of the unraced Alydeed mare Authentic Deed and is a half-sister to five-time stakes winner Authenicat.
