Queen Mum flew past her foes in the stretch to win her debut by a widening length and a half Thursday afternoon at Churchill Downs (VIDEO).
The filly is the latest September success for first-crop sire Paynter, who got his first stakes horse when the filly Dark Artist placed in the Sorority S. on Sept. 2, then his first graded stakes horse one day later when Affluential placed in the Coll Vidal S. (G3).
Queen Mum was in seventh behind a bunched-up group through the first three furlongs, but kicked into high gear when moved to the outside for the stretch run, powering past the field to assume command and pulling away at the end. The final time for the six furlongs on the fast track was 1:10.98.
Queen Mum was bred by WinStar Farm and is owned by Bach Stables LLC, who paid $190,000 for the dark bay filly at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling sale. Out of For Royalty, Queen Mum is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Constellation.
