Sharapova made her first stakes start in Sunday’s $100,000 Harry Henson S. at Sunland Park and the 4-year-old Outwork filly came away with a one-length victory.
With Joel Rosario in to ride the Peter Eurton trainee, Outwork took up a spot in third while four off the fence as she stalked the early leaders through the first turn and down the backstretch. Bold Rey set a swift pace and gave way on the turn, with Our Irish Rose and Sharapova head to head for the lead coming into the stretch. The duo was on even terms until the final sixteenth when Sharapova pulled clear to win the one-mile contest in 1:36.29.
Sharapova is owned by David Bernsen LLC, Exline-Border Racing LLC, Steve Dorfman and Richard Hausman. Exline purchased Sharapova for $130,000 at the 2020 OBS Summer 2-year-old sale.
Bred by Three Lyons Racing, LLC, Sharapova is Long Kiss Goodbye’s second foal and third winner from three to race, including her 3-year-old full brother Outkissed, who won an allowance race at Laurel Park Mar. 11. There is a 2-year-old full-sister also on record.
With a dozen stakes horses in 2021, Outwork was in the top five on the Second-Crop sire list. He is in the top 10 once again this year, with nearly $700,000 in progeny earnings to date.
