American Giant pulled away in the final furlong of Saturday’s Cellars Shiraz S. at Gulfstream Park to register a 1 3/4-length win in the one-mile turf affair for 3-year-old fillies.
American Giant was never worse than third at any call of the Cellars Shiraz. Marie’s Melody drew off by about five lengths midway on the backstretch, but American Giant began to reel her in and took the lead at the top of the stretch. She pulled clear from that point to easily hold off Secret Time (GER).
The Live Oak Plantation homebred won the Juvenile Fillies Turf S. a year ago over this same course and is now 4-0-0 in 11 starts and has earned $142,800. She is the first foal out of Giant Crystal, who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Gemologist.
American Giant is one of More Than Ready’s nine stakes winners this year. In Breeders’ Cup action Saturday, the WinStar stallion’s top-class mare Rushing Fall finished second in the $2 million Filly and Mare Turf (G1).
More Than Ready will stand the 2021 season at WinStar for $65,000 S&N.
