More Than Ready, the sire of the winners of six Breeders’ Cup races, has a big chance to add to that total during this year’s Nov. 1-2 event at Santa Anita Park.
The WinStar stallion has entries in four different races, including three juvenile races on Friday’s card. Uni (GB) rounds out the quartet in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on Saturday.
Hit the Road got a tough draw in the Juvenile Turf (G1), winding up in the far outside in the field of 14 going one mile. A winner of both his turf starts, Hit the Road was bred in Kentucky by Fred Hertrich III and is the first foal out of Highway Mary, whose dam Wandering Star won the E. P. Taylor S. (G2) on the grass.
Selflessly fared little better at the post draw for the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), getting post 13 of 14. The dark bay won the Sept. 29 Miss Grillo S. (G2) in her second start to break her maiden. Bred by George Louis Doetsch, Jr., she is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Enchanted Ghost.
Scabbard is an 8-1 chance in the $2 million Juvenile (G1), where the multiple graded stakes-placed colt will break from post five in a nine-horse field going 1 1/16-miles. Owned by his breeder Joseph Sutton, Scabbard is from the same family as Grade 1-placed and leading California sire General Meeting.
Uni also drew to the outside, in post 11 of 14 for Saturday’s Mile. The 5-year-old mare trained by Chad Brown has won six of seven starts since the beginning of 2018, including two Grade 1 events. With more than $1.2 million in earnings, she’s one of the leading earners in this year’s field.
