Sugar Queen, a $285,000 filly at the OBS March 2-year-old Sale this spring, kicked into gear in the final furlong of the Saratoga stretch to score an impressive four-length win in a 5 ½-furlong allowance race on a sloppy racetrack (VIDEO).
The Gemologist filly broke out on top, but settled back into third along the rail around the turn. John Velzaquez altered course in mid-stretch, going three-wide around On the Hop and pulling away with authority to stop the clock in 1:07.16.
The win was the second in three starts for the bay filly owned by Sumaya U. S. Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher. She has earned $108,500 and was bred in Kentucky by Top Racing LLC.
Gemoligist, a top-10 Second-Crop sire of 2017, has had an excellent July, with three stakes winners and the Grade 1-placed Golden Diamond.
