Frostmourne unleashed a furious kick in the stretch on the Delaware Park turf course to power to a six-length victory in Saturday’s $200,000 Kent S. (G3) for 3-year-olds (VIDEO).
The son of Speightstown, who won the Penn Mile (G2) in early June, has emerged as one of the top turf males of the year. The Green Lantern Stables homebred also won the Awad S. last autumn at Belmont Park, is now 4-1-0 in six starts and has banked $537,800.
With the oddly-named The Tortoise intent on the lead, Frostmourne took up a comfortable spot in second as the field went under the wire the first time. The Tortoise was up by more than a half-dozen lengths on the backstretch, but Frostmourne cut quickly into that lead on the turn, and once he was let loose by rider Joel Rosario, he sprinted clear from his pursuers in just a few strides, coming past the finish line in hand to get the 1 1/8-miles in 1:49.95 on a “good” turf course.
“He settled down nicely,” said Rosario. “The horse (The Tortoise) pulled away a little bit, but I took my time and I got into his stride. He relaxed and when I asked he responded.”
Speightstown has had another excellent year in 2017, with more than 90 individual winners, 10 North American stakes winners and the earners of more than $4.4 million.
