WinStar Farm’s multiple graded stakes winner and Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Two Phil’s, a son of leading sire and Grade 1 winner Hard Spun, sired his first reported foal on Friday, Jan. 10, at 12:15 a.m. The filly, who was bred by Meredith Krupp and Phillip Sagan Racing LLC, is out of the winning Street Sense mare Makin’ Sense, a half-sister to Indiana Oaks (G2) winner Tiz Windy and graded stakes-placed Patch. This is also the family of Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Banshee Breeze and Grade 2 winner American Anthem.
“She has great bone and really good size,” said co-breeder Meredith Krupp who owns Pine Branch Farm where the filly was born. “Very happy with her and thrilled for the Sagan family.”
Two Phil’s retired to stud with five wins from 10 career starts, having amassed earnings of $1,583,450. Bred in Kentucky by Phillip Sagan and campaigned in partnership by Sagan, Patricia’s Hope, and Madaket Stables, Two Phil’s overpowered his rivals in winning the $700,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks S. (G3) at Turfway Park at three. After finishing a close second in the Kentucky Derby, Two Phil’s registered a dominating win in the $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) at Thistledown. Two Phil’s was the first 3-year-old of his crop to record three consecutive 100+ Beyers, including a 105 in the Kentucky Derby and Ohio Derby.
Two Phil’s was precocious just like his sire—both were two-time stakes winners at two and won the same Derby prep before finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. As a juvenile, Two Phil’s won the Shakopee Juvenile Stakes at Canterbury Downs, crushing his foes by 9 ¾ lengths in a hand ride. He closed out his freshman season with a runaway 5 ¼-length victory in the Street Sense Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, giving him three wins from five starts at two.
Among his esteemed sire’s lifetime leading earners and his chief earner in 2023, Two Phil’s is produced from the multiple stakes-winning and graded stakes-placed General Quarters mare Mia Torri, a half-sister to graded stakes-placed River Rocks and stakes-placed Go Gator Girl Go and an earner of $314,720.
