First foal a colt for WinStar Farm’s Country Grammer

WinStar Farm’s multiple Grade 1 winner Country Grammer sired his first reported foal in early February when a colt out of the Bernardini mare Bernarda was born at River Valley Stock Farm in New York. The colt was bred by Scott and Debbie Pierce, who also bred Country Grammer, the third-leading North American-based earner of all time. The colt’s dam is out of the stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed Nakano, by First Samurai.

“We are very impressed with our Country Grammer colt,” said Dr. Scott Pierce. “He is quite attractive, correct, and has a great shoulder and hip. He is very athletic like his sire. We couldn’t be any happier with our first Country Grammer foal.”

Campaigned by Commonwealth, WinStar Farm, and Zedan Racing Stables, and trained by Bob Baffert, Country Grammer amassed a staggering $14,921,320 in earnings during a sensational racing career. Only the late Arrogate and Gun Runner have earned more in North America. A graded stakes winner at three, four, and five, Country Grammer proved a resounding winner of the $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1) in 2022, defeating the likes of Grade 1 winners Hot Rod Charlie and Life Is Good. In winning the 2021 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) in a determined effort, Country Grammer outkicked Grade 1 winners Royal Ship (BRZ) and Express Train for the brave score, registering a 106 Beyer Speed Figure.

All told, Country Grammer won or placed in 10 graded stakes races—also annexing the Peter Pan S. (3) at three and the San Antonio S. (G2) at five—and was runner-up consecutive years (2022-’23) in the Saudi Cup (G1). Country Grammer recorded a career-high 108 Beyer in finishing a close second in the 2021 Californian S. (G2) at Santa Anita and finished second to undefeated Horse of the Year Flightline in the 2022 Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar.

Country Grammer is by Classic winner and multiple Grade 1 winner Tonalist. Out of the winning Forestry mare Arabian Song, Country Grammer is a half-brother to stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed Joyful Cadence, and descends from the family of 2022 Grade 1 winner Obligatory, Group 1 stakes winner Etoile Montante, and multiple graded stakes winners Starformer and Bonny South.

A $450,000 graduate of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale as a two-year-old, Country Grammer was later acquired by WinStar Farm at the 2021 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale following the passing of original owner Paul Pompa Jr.
