Speightstown now has a remarkable 17 stakes winners in 2012 after Cougarstown came through with a three-quarter length victory in the $50,000 Harvest S. Sept. 22 at Stockton Fair in California. Speightstown is one of only two stallions this year to have more than $7 million in progeny earnings.
Four-year-old Cougarstown was making her stakes debut in the six furlong Harvest. The bay filly came away very alertly from her inside post, and was up a length after a quarter mile in :22.93. She basically maintained the same margin the rest of the trip, finishing up the distance in a quick 1:08.81.
Trained by Keith Nation for Edward and Theresa DeNike, Cougarstown is 3-3-0 in nine starts, with earnings of $100,371. The winner was bred in California by Rod and Lorraine Rodriguez from the Bertando mare Fair Apache, a three-time stakes winner of $328,765.
