Amalfi Sunrise, a TDN Rising Star after her six-length debut win on June 23, tallied another half-dozen length victory in Saturday’s $200,000 Sorrento S. (G2) at Del Mar.
The filly’s win capped a huge day for Constitution, who also had Our Country take maiden special weight on the grass at Saratoga. The WinStar stallion, also the sire of Sanford S. (G3) winner By Your Side, will likely move to the top of the First-Crop Sire list after Saturday’s results are fully tallied.
Incredibly, the top three finishers in the Sorrento are all by WinStar first-year sires, with Powerfulattraction (Commissioner) nosing out Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) for the place spot.
But Saturday was Amalfi Sunrise’s day to shine. Locked in a three-way duel for the lead for the backstretch run, the dark bay shook clear midway on the turn, then poured it on in the stretch to win easily in 1:10.96 for the six furlongs.
“It really was impressive the way she drew away at the end,” said trainer Simon Callaghan. “She’s a naturally fast filly and that’s the way she likes to run, up near the pace. She took a lot of heat and still was able to pull away which was very professional.”
Amalfi Sunrise has earned $159,000 in her two wins for co-owners Doug Branham and Marsha Naify. The winner was bred by Jack Mandato and sold for $185,000 at the OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training this past April.
