We the People tallied a second ultra-impressive victory in as many starts in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race at Oaklawn Park, winning the fourth race on the card by a comfortable five lengths.
The 3-year-old son of Constitution was named a TDN Rising Star following the five-length victory, which came exactly one month after he won his debut by 5 ¾-lengths.
Saturday’s win was almost a carbon copy of the maiden win. After contesting the pace while under a stout hold from Florent Geroux for the first half-mile, We the People came on even terms on the final bend, then sped clear from the field at the top of the stretch. He drew off under a hand ride in the final furlong to finish up in 1:43.66 on a fast track, earning an 89 Beyer Speed Figure.
We the People will now likely make his next start in a Kentucky Derby (G1) prep race, according to his trainer Rodolphe Brisset. Among the possible targets for We The People are the Arkansas Derby (G1) in three weeks and Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 9.
“That was the whole plan, be able to gain some seasoning, some experience,” Brisset said. “He broke maybe a step slower than last time and then he didn’t make the lead. But Flo [Geroux] got him into the race pretty good and let him do his thing. He didn’t use the whip, got him to work through the wire and even an extra sixteenth. Now, we’re going to see how he came out of it and the next couple of days we’ll have to make some plans, I guess.”
We the People, bred by Henley Farms Inc. in Kentucky, is bred very similarly to Constitution’s multiple Grade 1 winner Tiz the Law. He is the second foal out of the Tiznow mare Letchworth, who is a daughter of Grade 1 winner Harmony Lodge. Letchworth produced an Always Dreaming colt in 2020.
Owned by WinStar Farm LLC, CMNWLTH, and Siena Farm LLC, We the People sold for $230,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton March Select 2-year-old sale.
Last year’s leading Third-Crop sire, Constitution leads the 2022 Fourth-Crop list with eight stakes horses, five graded horses, and 42 winners to date.
