Bodemeister: G1 Careless Jewel is 1st in foal

G1-winning millionaire Careless Jewel became the first mare to check in foal from the debut book of Grade 1 winner Bodemeister, who’s standing his first season at stud at WinStar Farm in Versailles. Careless Jewel was confirmed 15 days in foal over the weekend.

Owned by Mike Moreno’s Southern Equine Stables, Careless Jewel recently had her second foal – a colt by Medaglia d’Oro foaled on Jan. 5 – before getting back in foal to Bodemeister on the first cover. A gray daughter of Tapit, Careless Jewel scored her biggest victory in the 2009 Alabama S. (G1) at Saratoga when she romped by 11 lengths and earned a 106 Beyer. Careless Jewel also won the Cotillion S. (G2) and Delaware Oaks (G2) before retiring with five wins from seven starts. She was purchased by Southern Equine for $1.95 million as a broodmare prospect at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton November Select Mixed Sale in Lexington.

Careless Jewel is one of several household names in the full first book of Bodemeister, last year’s 9 ½-length winner of the Arkansas Derby (G1) and runner-up in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S. (G1). Bodemeister retired to WinStar with earnings of $1,304,800, and he stands for a fee of $30,000 stands and nurses.
