Hemp Hemp Hurray’s 7 ¼-length win in Sunday’s $60,000 Tyro S. on the Monmouth Park turf course marked the second win in as many starts for the 2-year-old Artie Schiller colt, who was an impressive first-out maiden winner at Belmont Park on July 9.
The Tyro scratched down to four runners from the original seven, but soon after the break, Hemp Hemp Hurray found himself boxed in along the fence in third. Jockey Albin Jimenez had to put on the brakes several times until midway on the turn, when he made his way around Phonemyposseagain. In the stretch, it was all Hemp Hemp Hurray as he won drawing off under a hand ride.
“I thought I was going to be in front but [Jose] Ferrer’s horse [Phonemyposseagain] had so much speed I had to sit back,” Jimenez said. “Around the turn, I had so much horse I just moved out and he did the rest.”
Hemp Hemp Hurray is owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey and was bred by Bernard and Karen McCormack.
For Artie Schiller, Hemp Hemp Hurray marks his 36th lifetime stakes winner with progeny earnings approaching the $15 million mark.
