Appalachian Gem scores by 3 in Oaklawn MdSpWt

Gemologist, a top-three Second-Crop sire of 2017, got his eighth winner of the year on Monday at Oaklawn Park when Appalachian Gem tallied a three-length maiden special weight score.

Making his first start beyond a mile, Appalachian Gem stalked along the rail a few lengths off the lead down the backstretch, then found an opening along the rail at the top of the stretch, when he spurted through to take the lead and draw off in the final furlong. He finished the 1 1/16-miles in 1:45.40.

The winner is owned by Mark DeDomenico LLC and was bred by Randal Family Trust. The chestnut colt comes from the same female family The Wicked North, who won the Oaklawn H. (G1), as well as Grade 2 winners Wild and Wicked and A Lady From Dixie.
