Anne’s Beauty reigns in $157K Duchess S.

Anne’s Beauty overcame a rough trip to score by two lengths in the $157,363 Duchess S. July 30 at Woodbine to become the third stakes winner of the year for Artie Schiller, who just recently joined the WinStar Farm stallion roster.

Artie Schiller has seven stakes horses in 2011 and is ranked in the top 15 of all North American second crop sires.  Anne’s Beauty, who wrapped up her 2-year-old season with a victory in Woodbine’s Glorious Song S., was the leading earner of 2010 for her sire.

In the seven furlong Duchess, Anne’s Beauty stumbled but recovered quickly to establish her position about three lengths off the lead. Forced wide around the turn, she began to make up ground coming into the stretch and rolled to the front to finish in 1:22.83.

“The first half was pretty slow, but it worked out perfect,” said winning rider Patrick Husbands. “By the time I reached the five-eighths pole, I was on the outside and I was sitting on a lot of horse. She did everything professionally. When I got after her at the top of the lane, she kicked on.”

Anne’s Beauty, bred in Kentucky by Richard Forbush and Doug Oliver, improved her record to 3-1-2 in seven starts, with earnings of $261,876 for owner Robert Smithen. Smithen bought the filly for $30,000 out of the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale.
