Leading sire Speightstown is recovering well after undergoing colic surgery for a nephrosplenic entrapment Saturday morning at Hagyard’s in Lexington.
Dr. Nathan Slovis said: “Commonly enough, the large intestine can become hooked over the nephrosplenic ligament, but once on the table the problem was rectified in less than 15 minutes. We’re 24 hours post-surgery now and his prognosis is excellent. We will be releasing him back to the farm in the morning.”
Elliott Walden, WinStar President & CEO, said: “We were blessed this happened 100 days prior to the breeding season, and according to Hagyard’s he will be healed in plenty of time as not to affect his stud duties. I want to thank the team at Hagyard’s and my staff at WinStar for their quick diagnosis and action.”
An Eclipse Champion on the track, Speightstown is having a banner year at stud in 2012 as one of the leading General Sires in North America with over $9 million in progeny earnings to date. The son of Gone West has sired 20 stakes winners so far in 2012, including G1 winners Golden Ticket and Poseidon’s Warrior. His 2013 fee has not yet been announced.
