WinStar continues to offer some of their best yearlings at auction, and early results from the Keeneland September sale show buyers continue to show plenty of interest in the farm’s offerings. Through the first four days of the sale, 14 WinStar yearlings sold for an average price of $257,860.
Leading the way was hip No. 457, a bay colt out of the Distorted Humor mare Weekend Whim that sold for $600,000 to J. S. Company Ltd. Weekend Whim is a full sister to Any Given Saturday, who earned over $1 million in a stellar career that included victories in the Grade 1 Haskell I., Grade 2 Brooklyn H., and Grade 2 Dwyer S.
Hip No. 246, a half-brother to WinStar Farm’s $1 million earner Rule, went for $420,000 to Steve Young, agent. The yearling filly is by Distorted Humor out of Rockcide, a half-sister to Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S. (G1) winner Funny Cide.
Hip No. 356, a bay colt, brought $410,000 from Jerry Crawford’s Donegal Racing. The colt is the first foal out of the Storm Cat mare Stormy Welcome, whose granddam is Weekend Surprise, dam of Horse of the Year A.P. Indy, Grade 1 winner Summer Squall, and Grade 3 winner Welcome Surprise.
A pair of Distorted Humor yearlings brought $340,000 a piece during the early days of the sale. Hip No. 113, a chestnut filly, went to William Clifton, Jr. The filly is out of Lasting Appeal, a full sister to Grade 2 winner and top sire Jump Start.
Shadwell Estate Company, Ltd. bought hip No. 580 for a similar price. The chestnut colt is the first foal out of Blushing, an unraced full sister to champion 3-year-old filly Wait a While, winner of 11 graded stakes and $2,181,917.
