Bodemeister to skip Belmont, point for Grade 1 Haskell

After superlative runner-up efforts in both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1), Zayat Stables’ Bodemeister will skip the third leg of the Triple Crown and instead point for the Haskell I. (G1), July 29 at Monmouth Park, for his next start.

Shortly after the Preakness, trainer Bob Baffert knew that the Belmont S. (G1) was not in the plan. “He could use a breather,” Baffert stated simply.

After not starting at age 2, Bodemeister has already made six starts in 2012, ascending from the maiden ranks in February to Kentucky Derby favorite in just three months. His 9 1/2-length victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1) was the most impressive score in any Derby prep race.

The $1 million Haskell is a key race in determining year-end championship honors for the 3-year-olds. A win would give Zayat its first victory in the race, while Baffert has won the 1 1/8-mile contest a record five times.
