Guam Typhoon storms home in Byrd Memorial

Guam Typhoon zipped six furlongs in 1:08.59 in the $100,000 Robert C. Byrd Memorial S. [VIDEO] Saturday at Mountaineer Park, the second straight stakes victory for the 6-year-old son of Distorted Humor. The WinStar Farm stallion is once again near the top of the General Sire List, with 10 stakes winners in the U. S., plus French Group 1 winner Aesop’s Fables.

Guam Typhoon got caught up in a three-way tussle early in the Byrd Memorial. Mega Rush was the first to crack under the pressure, then Delaunay began to drop back nearing the stretch after a half-mile in a torrid :43.40. Guam Typhoon drew away a bit in mid-stretch, then dug in late to hold off the charge of St. Maximus Gato, winning by a neck on the wire. The final time was less than a second off the track record.

The victory was the seventh straight win for Guam Typhoon, who is trained by Jamie Ness for Midwest Thoroughbreds. Guam Typhoon is now 12-3-2 in 24 starts, earning $374,634.

Guam Typhoon is out of La Cucina (IRE), whose offspring include Miss Isella, a three-time Grade 2 winner at Churchill Downs, and Sir Cherokee, winner of the Arkansas Derby (G2) and Ack Ack H. (G3).
