Champion Speightstown sired three new stakes winners at three tracks and in two countries on June 2nd.
These three brought Speightsown’s 2012 totals to 10 stakes winners and 18 stakes horses, among the top two in each category this year among all North American sires.
First to strike blacktype on the day was two-year-old Freetown, who won the Premio Alberto Giubilo in Italy. Freetown was winning for the second time in three starts this season.
Stateside, New Farm’s 5-year-old The Hunk went gate-to-wire in the $60,000 John J. Reilly H. at Monmouth Park. Sent off the 5-2 second choice and carrying high weight of 123 lbs., The Hunk never let any of his 10 foes within a length at any point, drawing off late to win by 2 1/4-lengths. The New Jersey-bred was winning for the sixth win in 12 career starts, and has now banked $224,791.
Later on Saturday evening at Churchill Downs, Island Bound became Speightstown’s 34th career stakes winner and 11th Graded stakes winner, with her daylight victory in the Winning Colors S. (G3). Owned by Robert Manfuso and Trained by Ian Wilkes, Island Bound has won or placed 14 times in 20 starts, and amassed earnings of $213,238.
Speightstown is America’s #5 General Sire, with progeny earnings in excess of $3,500,000.
