Speightstown sired his third stakes winner in 10 days, when Sum of the Parts earned a hard-fought victory in the $100,000 Tom Ridge S. at Presque Isle Downs on May 15.
Sum of the Parts was the 30th career stakes winner for Speightstown, following major stakes wins in the past 10 days by Going to Kukaro (at Belmont May 12) and Champion Essence Hit Man (G3 at Woodbine May 6). Speightstown now ranks among the top four U.S. sires by worldwide earnings, with six stakes winners, 14 stakes horses, and progeny earnings nearing $3-million.
Three-year-old Sum of the Parts was sent off the 3-2 favorite in the six furlong Tom Ridge (VIDEO; select May 15, race 7). The dark bay colt jumped right to the lead from the outside in the field of seven. Under a strong hold from Julien Leparoux, Sum of the Parts was up a head after a half mile in :44.63. He was confronted by Hogy, who actually put his head in front coming into the stretch. Leparoux let his mount out, however, and re-took the lead to ultimately win by a neck in 1:09.02.
The victory was the third win in seven starts for Sum of the Parts, who is two-for-two this year. He has now earned $145,263 for co-owners William Lawrence and Klaravich Stables. Bred in Kentucky by Farfellow Farms, Sum of the Parts was a $150,000 Barretts March 2-year-old in Training Sales grad.
