Boisterous made it four career stakes wins for the 5-year-old son of Distorted Humor with a one-length score in the $150,000 Fort Marcy S. (G3) at Belmont Park on May 5. His previous black-type scores came in 2011 in the Grade 2 Red Smith at Aqueduct, as well as the Grade 3 Knickerbocker and the Three Coins Up S. at Belmont Park.
The winner is the fifth stakes victor of 2012 for his sire, whose progeny have earned nearly $2.5 million to date this year, putting Distorted Humor in the top 10 on the General Sire list.
Boisterous, a Phipps stable homebred, made his patented late move after being taken near the back of the six-horse field early by Alan Garcia. The pace was very slow on the yielding turf, with the six furlongs in 1:15.32, nevertheless Boisterous gobbled up the ground in the lane to win while well off the rail. He completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.89.
“I know my horse can run the last part, so I wanted to be patient,” said Garcia. “I was waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting, and turning for home I let him run and he did really well.”
“We originally were disappointed in his last race (Mar. 12 allowance race at Gulfstream Park, his first start of 2012) because he didn’t finish, but looking further at it, he made an early move and then flattened out,” said Robbie Medina, assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. “That type of turf course with the short stretch doesn’t suit him; he prefers making that one run through the stretch.”
Next up for Boisterous will likely be the Grade 1, $600,000 Woodford Reserve Manhattan S. on Belmont Stakes Day, Sat., June 9.
With the victory, Boisterous is now 7-0-1 in 16 starts, amassing $457,990. He comes from a typical top-class Phipps mare in Emanating, a stakes winner of $273,030 who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Gold Fever.
