Distorted Legacy triumphant in Sky Beauty

Distorted Legacy’s three-quarter length victory in the $60,000 Sky Beauty S. July 1 at Belmont Park gave her sire Distorted Humor his 13th stakes winner and stakes win of 2011, both tops among all North American stallions.

The 1 1/16 mile Sky Beauty, for fillies and mares 3 and up, went off with a six horse field. A three-horse speed duel set up soon after the start; meanwhile, Distorted Legacy was some dozen lengths off the lead for the run down the backstretch. After a half-mile in a torrid :45.72 seconds, the leaders’ margin began to shrink around the turn, and by the time the field hit the top of the stretch, Distorted Legacy was within a length of the lead. Taking the rail route, she collared Ask the Moon about a furlong from the wire and then held Grade 2 winner Satans Quick Chick off to finish in 1:42.26 over a fast track.

The Bruce Lunsford homebred is now 3-4-1 in 13 starts. The $36,000 payday raised her overall take to $138,336. The 4-year-old chestnut filly is trained by Angel Penna, Jr.

Distorted Legacy is one of nine winners out of Bunting, who is also the dam of millionaire Vision and Verse, who won the Illinois Derby (G2) and was second in the Belmont S. (G1) and Travers S. (G1). Bunting was second in both the Ashland S. (G1) and Black Eyed Susan S. (G2).
