WinStar Farm’s Tourist, a multiple Grade 1 winner by Tiznow, sired his first winner when Kactus Kate kicked off her racing career with a decisive two-length victory in a 4 ½-furlong maiden special weight at Emerald Downs on Wednesday, July 1.
Kactus Kate broke sharply and vied for command early. She took over the lead at the top of the stretch and the fleet-footed Kentucky-bred filly kicked clear of her rivals in the lane, rolling to a clear-cut score.
An Oak Crest Farm homebred out of the winning Woodman mare Desert Liaison, a half-sister to multiple stakes winners Broad Appeal and Inclinator, Kactus Kate is a half-sister to Frizette S. (G1) winner Sutra and stakes winner Karula.
“Tourist is Tiznow’s most accomplished son at stud, and It’s exciting to see his first 2-year-olds showing their precocity,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar’s president, CEO, and racing manager. “We are looking forward to him carrying on the sire line.”
A multiple Grade 1-winning miler and the winner of the fastest Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) in history, taking the 2016 renewal in 1:31.71, which is also the fastest mile ever run in a Grade 1 race, Tourist is a WinStar homebred son of back-to-back Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Tiznow. Trained by Bill Mott and campaigned by WinStar Farm, Wachtel Stable, and Gary Barber, Tourist posted seven triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in his outstanding career and retired with $2,170,340 in career earnings. Tourist is out of the multiple stakes-producing Unbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Melody, dam of four stakes winners to date.
