The 2-year-old filly Mandy gave her all to win a six-furlong maiden special weight on Labor Day at Del Mar, besting Sofi’s Gold by a neck after battling her for nearly the entire race.
Mandy’s victory gave Commissioner nine winners from his first crop and capped off an excellent week for the top-10 Freshman sire, who also accounted for the maiden special winner Viv and the stakes-placed colt Island Commish, his third stakes horse.
Mandy, on the inside of Sofi’s Gold from the outset were side-by-side, with Mandy on the lead until mid-stretch, when Sofi’s Gold took over, but Mandy battled back to win by a neck in an extremely gallant effort.
The winner, owned by Rockingham Ranch, was bred by JAAM Racing, Inc. and is from the family of Grade 1 winner Chief Honcho and multiple graded winner American Chance.
