Qurbaan scored his second straight win in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch H. during the Labor Day card at Saratoga, giving his top-10 sire Speightstown his ninth stakes winner of the year.
Qurbaan, who hadn’t won since taking the 2018 Baruch in his first U. S. start in last year, found the soft turf course to his liking Monday. Deftly placed in third along the rail for the first six furlongs, found an opening at the top of the stretch and surged to the lead, then drew away from Sacred Life to win by 2 1/4-lengths.
“On paper, it looked like there was only one horse with speed,” winning rider Joel Rosario said. “He was up close and it looked like I could go to the lead, but I just decided to follow the other horse [No. 4, Dream Friend]. I got through inside and everything worked out good. He was fine with the ground. He gave me a strong kick and it looked like he was really happy with it today.”
Owned by , Qurbaan is 7-3-6 in 22 starts and has banked over $800,000 for Shadwell Stable.
Bred in Kentucky by Justin Carthy, Qurbaan is out of the graded stakes-place Zieten mare Flip Flop.
