Deviant became the first stakes winner for Freshman Sire Daredevil on Aug. 14 with a commanding 7 3/4-length victory in the $75,000 El Joven S. at Retama Park in Houston.
After a trio of main track starts, Deviant switched to the grass for the El Joven, as well as stretching out to two turns for the first. Responding with a superb performance, Deviant was hung wide on both turns, but made up substantial ground on the final bend and then rapidly drew off in the stretch to win going away (VIDEO).
“This was a colt we fell in love with from the first moment we saw him,” said racing manager Frank Alosa of Red Lane Thoroughbreds, who selected Deviant at the sale with trainer Danny Pish. “He was a big, strong, good-walking colt we knew we wanted to add to the stable.”
Deviant is one of four winners out of Alkmaar, who siblings include multiple stakes winners Rinaldi and Hollinger. Deviant was bred by Robert Harvey and sold to Red Lane for $150,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
Daredevil now has a remarkable three stakes horses from three winners, including Sorrento S. (G2) placed Shedaresthedevil.
