Speightstown’s Grade 3 winning son Lexitonian prevailed by a neck in a three-horse photo in Sunday’s $75,000 Concern S. at Laurel Park.
Lexitonian, who won the Chick Lang S. (G3) on Preakness Day, is undefeated at Maryland tracks and is now 3-0-0 in seven outings and has earned $219,010 for owner/breeder Calumet Farm.
Lexitonian was put into the race right away by jockey Sheldon Russell, racing between horses through a quarter-mile in :22.63. Side-by-side with Captain Von Trapp at the head of the lane, they were soon joined by Royal Urn. Captain Von Trapp began to yield in the final furlong, and Lexitonian held off Royal Urn by a neck, with Grade 1 winner Mind Control a nose back in third.
The winner covered the seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds in 1:22.21.
“I said to Sheldon’s agent we were going to take back because I thought there would be a lot of speed, but I said, ‘You know, what about putting him on the lead?’ He will fight to the wire,” said winning trainer Jack Sisterson. “I think credit to Sheldon Russell. That’s what good jockeys do.”
A top-10 sire again this year, Speightstown has three graded stakes winners and six stakes winners overall to date, while his progeny have earned more than $5.4 million.
