A Bit of Both is now a stakes winner on turf and dirt after a 2 1/2-length win in Saturday’s $75,000 Honey Bee S. at Monmouth Park. The 3-year-old Paynter filly has won five of six lifetime starts by an average margin of just over six lengths.
After taking the Game Face S. at Gulfstream Park on April 20, trainer Jason Servis decided to try the bay filly on the grass. Showing her customary speed, she went right to the front and was comfortably in front until making the turn for home, when she went wide on the track, but recovered nicely to win by 2 ½-lengths in 1:03.31 for the 5 ½ furlongs on the firm turf.
“I had a feeling she would be as good on the turf as she has been on dirt. She ran good,” said Servis. “I was a little surprised she went right to the front and showed the same speed on turf as she has on dirt. You never really know with that. Now we have some options with her. She’s a talented filly.”
Owned by the partnership of Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC, Darsan Inc., Bethlehem Stables and Simo, A Bit of Both was bred by Darsan and WinStar Farm. Her earnings now stand at $175,610.
Third-Crop sire Paynter is among the leaders of his generation, ranking first by black type winners and wins, third by winners and fourth by progeny earnings.
Pedigree notes from the TDN:
A Bit of Both is the second foal out of Lizzie K, a half-sister to GSW & GISP Globetrotter and SW Slew’s Exchange, who won Monmouth’s Klassy Briefcase S. during her career.
