“Phenomenal” Paynter filly brings $450,000 at OBS

The praise flowed for both Paynter and his $450,000 filly following her time in the ring during Wednesday’s session of the OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training.

One of the first horses in the ring on Wednesday, hip No. 312 set the tone with a lively round of bidding before being secured by Mike Ryan on behalf of Allen Wise’s Wise Racing.

“I knew it was going to be tough to get her. When I saw Bob Baffert out back, I said, ‘This is not going to be good.’ This filly had Linda Rice and Bob Baffert [bidding on her], a lot of astute people were on her.”

Bred by Falcon Wood Partners, and with a :10 flat Under Tack breeze to her credit, the bay is out of stakes-placed Mallory Street and hails from the family of Grade 1 winner New Year’s Day and multiple graded winner Mohaymen.

“The filly blew me away. She sold herself. She is by Paynter, who I really like. I think he is underrated as a stallion. They have a lot of heart. They are tough. He was a very tough, good horse himself.”

Consignor Barry Eisaman sees a big future on the track for the filly.

“She was always very correct and very healthy,” Eisaman said. “She has immense speed and she has a pedigree that will carry at a distance. You should probably go wager in the future wagers for the Kentucky Oaks of next year.”

In addition to his successes in the sales ring, Paynter has had two stakes winners on the track this month and current ranks fourth on the 2019 Third-Crop Sire list.
