Roy H’s scintillating performance in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) gave the son of More Than Ready his second straight victory in the race and made him the likely favorite to repeat as the Eclipse Champion Male Sprinter as well.
Roy H is only the second repeat winner of the Sprint in its 35-year history; Midnight Lute accomplished the feat in 2007-8.
More Than Ready now has sired winners of six Breeders’ Cup races, tying him for the most by any sire.
Roy H, in the outside post in the field of nine, broke very well and was never more than a couple lengths off the lead at any point. Three-wide around the turn, he swept by Promises Fulfilled entering the stretch and was in control the rest of the way, winning by 3 1/4-lengths over Whitmore while getting the six furlongs on 1:08.24.
“(He’s) just a sound horse,” winning trainer Peter Miller said. “Just a real solid, sound horse. He brings it every time, and I couldn’t be more proud. Words don’t even express my feelings.”
Bred in Kentucky by Ramona S. Bass out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Elusive Diva, Roy H was purchased for $310,000 by his owner Rockingham Ranch at the 2014 Keeneland April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. His record stands at 9-5-2 from 22 starts, with total earnings of $3,019,765.
