WinStar Farm’s first-year stallions Cogburn, Timberlake, and Heartland have had their first mares checked in foal, the farm announced today. Each of the first four mares bred to North American track record-setter Cogburn have checked in foal.
Cogburn, a fleet-footed son of Not This Time, proved an electrifying winner of the Jaipur S. (G1) last summer. In the race, he set a North American record for 5 ½ furlongs on the turf, completing the distance in :59.80 and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 114, the highest of 2024. He was also an authoritative winner of the $2 million Turf Sprint S. (G2) at Kentucky Downs where he ran six furlongs on turf in 1:07.68, just missing another course record. All told, Cogburn finished first or second in 11-of-16 lifetime starts and banked more than $2.4 million.
Timberlake is a winner of the stallion-making Champagne S. (G1) at two and a millionaire son of perennial leading sire Into Mischief. Named a TDN Rising Star following a scintillating 9 ¼-length maiden special weight score at Ellis Park in just his second career start, Timberlake joins Practical Joke as the only other son of Into Mischief at stud to win a Grade 1 as a 2-year-old. A $350,000 purchase at the 2022 Keeneland September Sale, Timberlake hails from a prolific female family and is out of the stakes-placed Lookin At Lucky mare Pin Up (IRE).
Heartland, a TDN Rising Star, is a son of Justify and a half-brother to Eclipse Champion 2-Year-Old Classic Empire. Heartland flashed his brilliance in a head-turning career debut at Del Mar. In a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight, Heartland overcame veering in at the start to win going away by two lengths. His final clocking of 1:03.20 was the fastest time of any 2-year-old at the distance at Del Mar or Saratoga in 2023.
