Tiz a Slam became Tiznow’s 40th graded stakes winner, drawing off by 3 ½ lengths to win the $125,000 Ontario Derby (G3) Sunday at Woodbine.
Trained by Roger Attfield, Tiz a Slam picked up his first graded stakes score in the nine furlong race for 3-year-olds over the all-weather track.
Ridden by Eurico Rosa Da Silva and off at odds of 9-1, Tiz a Slam took a bit to settle in third behind slow fractions of :25.13 and :49.20. The field was facing a strong headwind as they turned for home with high winds, showers, and cooler temperatures in the area Sunday.
The 4-5 favorite Holy Helena was last early and remained near the rear of the field until the top of the stretch when she made a move, but Tiz a Slam had the jump on her and came off the turn with the lead. He used this advantage and was clear to the wire, stopping the clock in 1:51.57 over the fast track. The Tiznow colt had finished 3 ½ lengths behind the filly Holy Helena in the Queen’s Plate three starts back, but he got his revenge on her today (VIDEO).
Bred in Ontario, Tiz a Slam is out of Chiefswood Stable’s mare Flaming Rose. He won his first two starts, then the Cup and Saucer S. in his fourth start. The Ontario Derby (G3) is his win first of the year, but the colt has never finished worse than fifth. This victory brings his record to four wins and two seconds from 11 starts, with earnings of almost $500,000. His owner/breeders earned $20,000 in WIN awards with this victory.
