Bodie’s Valentine huge rally in the final three furlongs carried the Bodemeister filly to a two-length victory in a $129,000 maiden special weight marathon Thursday at Kentucky Downs.
The dark bay 3-year-old took back almost immediately out of the gate for the 1 5/16-mile contest and was at the back of the 12-horse field into the first turn. Content to stay at the back until Jose Ortiz took her very wide with three furlongs to run, Bodie’s Valentine flew by the entire field in less than a quarter-mile and was pulling away easily at the wire (VIDEO).
The winner was bred by Merribelle Stable and Bodemeister Syndicate and is out of Summer Scene, who is a half-sister to Eclipse Champion 2-year-old colt Stevie Wonderboy.
Bodemeister is the leading Second-Crop Sire of 2017 and has also been one of the top sires of 2-year-olds this year. He has a total of 80 yearlings cataloged in the upcoming Keeneland September sale.
