Bodemeister’s brilliant 3-year-old colt Always Dreaming will break from post five in the $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1), which drew a full field of 20.
Always Dreaming has been the talk of the barn area since his bullet five-furlong work last weekend, and continues to impress his connections with his daily routine.
“I liked what I saw again today,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “He’s full of himself; he’s feeling good.”
Pletcher also found the silver lining in the colt’s post position.
“It’s fine. Ideally, I’d have liked to have been a little farther out, but he won the Florida Derby from the four, so that says something. In the end, we’re good with it.”
Always Dreaming has been perfect in three starts for his trainer, winning by a combined margin of 20 1/2-lengths. He was installed the 5-1 second choice by oddsmaker Mike Battaglia.
Always Dreaming is the first Derby starter for Bodemeister, who ran a gallant second in the both the 2012 Derby and Preakness (G1). Bodemeister is currently second on the Second-Crop Sire list with $1.16 million in progeny earnings.
The 143rd Run for the Roses will be televised live on NBC and is race 12, with a scheduled post of 6:46 p.m. ET.
