Coastland made his career debut a winning one, taking a maiden special weight at Thistledown on Wednesday, becoming the first winner for WinStar Farm’s Grade 1 winner Promises Fulfilled.
Trained by Tim Hamm and ridden by Rocco Bowen, Coastland stalked the early pace from mid-pack in the early stages of the five-furlong event. Always traveling well, he made a sweeping three-wide move around the far turn and edged clear from his foes late to score going away by 1 ½ lengths. An Ohio homebred for WinStar Farm and Hamm’s Blazing Meadows Farm, Coastland is produced from the Winslow Homer mare Mother Nature.
Promises Fulfilled, a son of Classic winner and three-time Grade 1 winner Shackleford, enjoyed an outstanding career for Robert J. Baron and WinStar Farm. Trained by Dale Romans, Promises Fulfilled won five Graded stakes at distances from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles; in front at first call in 15 of 17 lifetime starts. He won the H. Allen Jerkens S. (G1), Fountain of Youth S. (G2), John A. Nerud S. (G2), Phoenix S. (G2), and Amsterdam S. (G3), competing exclusively in Graded stakes company following his first two victories at two.
At three, Promises Fulfilled stamped himself as a leading sophomore with an emphatic wire-to-wire win in the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park in his seasonal debut, defeating 2-Year-Old Champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Good Magic, and earning himself a berth in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
He asserted himself as a premier sprinter later that summer, running his rivals off their feet in the 6 ½-furlong Amsterdam S. at Saratoga. In winning the Amsterdam, Promises Fulfilled blitzed six furlongs in 1:08 2/5 en route to a dominating 3 ¼-length win in a final time of 1:15, earning a 107 Beyer Speed Figure. He returned a month later and captured the prestigious H. Allen Jerkens S. He once again proved uncatchable, winning the seven-furlong event gate to wire in 1:21 2/5. He made it three consecutive Graded triumphs with a determined score in the Phoenix S. at Keeneland, beating older Grade 1 winner and Champion Sprinter Whitmore.
The following year at four in 2018, Promises Fulfilled rolled to an authoritative 4 ½-length win in the John A. Nerud S. at Belmont Park, recording a career-best 108 Beyer. All told, the handsome chestnut won seven of 17 races, banking $1,455,530.
Bred in Kentucky by David Jacobs, Promises Fulfilled descends from the Storm Cat line, being a son of Shackleford, winner of the Preakness S. (G1), Clark H. (G1), and Metropolitan H. (G1) during his accomplished racing career. Promises Fulfilled is produced from the multiple Graded stakes-placed Marquetry mare Marquee Delivery and is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Marquee Miss and graded stakes-placed Tiesto.
The first 2-year-olds by Promises Fulfilled have caught the eye of buyers at public auction. They include a $230,000 colt now named Hot Promise bought by L.E.B for West Point Thoroughbreds and CJ Stable at the OBS March Sale, and a $100,000 filly named Stay Classy who was bought by Deuce Greathouse, agent, at the OBS Spring Sale in April.
