More Than Ready colt “great” for Kentucky Derby (G1)

More Than Ready’s 3-year-old colt Tom’s Ready looks to make history in Saturday’s $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1) when the colt breaks from post 12 in the field of 20 3-year-olds.

Winner of a maiden special weight in September at Churchill Downs, Tom’s Ready placed in both the LeComte S. (G3) and Louisiana Derby (G2) during the Fair Grounds meet. His trainer Dallas Stewart, who has two Kentucky Derby second-place finishes on his resume, is full of enthusiasm for the Run for the Roses.

“Great draw. Great field,” said Stewart after Wednesday’s post position draw. “We’re ready to go. The Bensons (owners G M B Racing) are ready to go. We’re ready to roll.”

Tom’s Ready will be ridden Saturday by Brian Hernandez, Jr., who has been aboard for most of the colt’s nine starts.

The Kentucky Derby is race 12 on Saturday, with a scheduled post time of 6:34 p.m. ET. NBC television coverage runs from 4 – 7:30 p.m.
